Prophets are urgently relevant to the church’s present-day life because of their passionate insistence on God and social justice. They declare that God loves justice and hates robbery and wrongdoing (Isaiah 61:8). They admonish God’s people to practice justice and righteousness, as in the words of the prophet Amos, later quoted famously by Martin Luther King, Jr.: “let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24).

This online class will read and discuss selections from the Hebrew Prophets together with secondary readings by the civil-rights activist, theologian, and rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel and the Anglican scholar of Old Testament and preaching, Ellen Davis.
