This course offers a consideration of the theological, ethical, spiritual, and practical dimensions of vocation and the meaning of work in both the church and the world. Special attention will be given to Martin Luther, John Calvin, Ignatius of Loyola, and Teresa of Avila—key voices from the sixteenth century who can inform how we think about vocation in a post-Christian secular age. The course will be both theological and practical, providing participants with opportunities to reflect on the meaning of work and vocation, as well as skills to discern vocation through transitions in life and work. We will also consider what it means to provide counsel and encouragement to others as they discern their vocations, whether we’re acting as pastors, spiritual directors, or friends.
