Food/Faith/Justice

Dr. Christopher Carter

Food is central to the human experience because without it we cannot live. Because of the abundance of food in our country, many American Christians give little thought to the role their faith plays in what is found on their plates and in their bowls. What does it mean to think theologically about our food choices? This question will ground our exploration of the course material. We will examine issues of food access, food production, cooking, the role of animals, and farming with the goal of discerning appropriate Christian actions to respond to one of the most pressing social justice issues of today.

Instructor: The Rev. Dr. Christopher Carter

Christopher Carter’s teaching and research focuses on philosophical and theological ethics, Black and Womanist theological ethics, environmental ethics, and animals and religion. He approaches religious studies as a liberation ethicist committed to exploring how the moral economy of U.S. religious thought and culture impact the everyday lives of marginalized populations, particularly African American and Latino/a communities. He is active in the leadership of the American Academy of Religion where he serves as a steering committee member of both the Religion and Ecology and the Animals and Religion Group. Professor Carter is also a pastor within the United Methodist Church and has served churches in Battle Creek Michigan, Torrance, and Compton California.
