Sunlight and Shadows
with Catherine Nicholls

THE WORK OF BRITISH COLUMBIA ARTIST EMILY CARR is the inspiration for this workshop.

We will begin by exploring the principal of notan (light and dark) on paper. Spontaneous curved seam piecing and free appliqué are ideal techniques to create the high skies and forest landscape for which Carr is famous.

Using Carr’s paintings and writings as inspiration, students will create their own textile piece.

Offering a wonderful chance to combine text and imagery, this workshop covers several of Catherine’s favourite techniques for creating text on fabric

CATHERINE NICHOLLS lives and works in Gibsons, B.C. and draws inspiration from the natural world, her travels, and the people she meets along the way. The history of people, their stories, legends, cultures and sense of place are the creative raw materials for her themed exhibitions worldwide.

She works on paper and fabric with discharge, dyeing, drawing, painting, and printing. Textile pieces are densely stitched by hand or machine, often both.
