Introduction to to the Old Testament

This course will begin by looking at the role of the Old Testament in the Church’s historical and liturgical life and by exploring some of the various interpretive modes Christians and Jews have applied to the Old Testament over the past millennia. Next, course participants will examine particular exemplary passages with the Old Testament utilizing three key thematic biblical dialogues: justice versus mercy, kinship versus kingship, and wisdom versus theodicy. After completing the course, participants should be able to describe the range of literary genres present within the Old Testament and explain how one might interpret these texts today within the context of Christian worship and the structure provided by the Revised Common Lectionary.
