Experience the compelling practice of painting an icon using techniques developed before the year 1000 A.D. Using gold leaf and egg tempera on gessoed boards, instructor Suzanne Schleck guides you through a week of art and prayer. Schleck has studied iconography for over 20 years and welcomes experienced artists as well as beginners. Participants may choose to paint one of three traditional icons: King David, Ohrid Annunciation and Yaroslavl Mother of God (see images below).

Days begin with an early morning Eucharist followed by an anointing of hands in the studio. Noonday prayers are said before lunch, and each day ends with an evening prayer in Kanuga’s Chapel of the Transfiguration.

Space is limited to 35 participants.

Extend your retreat for an extra day!

About the Instructor

Suzanne Schleck - Iconography RetreatSuzanne Schleck of Whiting, NJ, returns for her thirteenth year of teaching icon painting at Kanuga. A retired public school art teacher, she has studied for more than 20 years with the Rev. John Walsted, master iconographer and expert on 14th to 16th century Russian icons, and has taken additional workshops with Robert Lentz and the Prosopon School of Iconography. Her work has been published in Episcopal Life and in several online exhibits with Episcopal Church and the Visual Arts, as well as the 2006 General Convention and Princeton Theological Seminary.

Cancellations and refunds are provided in a tiered system based on proximity to the event start date. Any cancellation made at least three weeks (21 days) before the event start date will result in a refund, minus the $100 nonrefundable deposit. Cancellations made 20-15 days before the event start date will receive a 50% refund, minus the $100 nonrefundable deposit. Cancellations made 14-8 days before the event start date will receive a 25% refund, minus the $100 nonrefundable deposit. Cancellations made within 7 days of the event start date are not eligible for a refund.
