Guided Retreat: The Psalms as a School of Prayer

The Psalms as a School of Prayer

Friday–Sunday, November 3–5, 2017

The Psalms have been the prayer of the Church since the earliest Christian times, providing the foundation for the prayer life of priests and professed monastics.

Jesus prayed the Psalms; our Jewish brothers and sisters expressed their relationship with God through the Psalms.

This retreat will use a prayerful approach to the Psalms with the goal of incorporating elements of praise, lament (complaint), thanksgiving, and petition into our daily prayer lives. We will also address the serious difficulties we find in the Psalms today, e.g., a tendency towards vengeful violence, an emphasis on punishment, and gender issues in the language of the Psalms.

With some background and reflection, we can better understand and pray the Psalms in a transformative context, experiencing them as a cry from the heart, a path of prayer, and an essential part of the prayers of contemporary individuals and communities.

Led by Joseph Clarkson, MTS, retreat leader and former school principal.
