Week 1: July 9-13, 2018

This course is a topical study of the book of Ecclesiastes. We will read sections of Ecclesiastes in order to reflect on a series of topics, including the history of Israel, the ethics of work, enjoyment and imperial rule, end of life, and faith in a time of social dislocation. The aim is to create a conversation between the biblical text and issues that face us in everyday life.

Mari Jørstad is a biblical scholar and a Research Associate at the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Art & Art History and Political Science at the University of Toronto, a Master of Religion at the Toronto School of Theology, and a Ph.D. in Religion (Hebrew Bible) at Duke University. Originally from Norway, she spent a decade in Canada, and now lives in North Carolina.
