2013 Canadian School of Peacebuilding

Whatever your reason is, we’d love to have you join us at the fifth annual Canadian School of Peacebuilding (CSOP), a program of Canadian Mennonite University (CMU),  in Winnipeg, MB, June 17-21 and June 24-28, 2013.

We now have syllabi available online for most of our courses, which are a great source of additional information, whether you are taking the course for credit or training.

If you are interested in further peace skills training, CSOP courses can kick start that training in a couple of ways.  You can earn two days of credit towards a certificate with Resolution Skills Centre in Winnipeg, MB for each of Collaborative & Culturally Responsive Partnerships and Train the Trainer.  As well, participants who complete Train the Trainer are eligible to take the Advanced Training of Trainer course from Training for Change in Philadelphia.

Finding Your Voice: Understanding Nonviolent Action for Today’s Complex World

Instructor: Mubarak Awad

We are exposed to the nature of violent resolution of conflicts every time we listen to the news or read a newspaper.  But the history, strategy, and tactics of nonviolent direct action are far less familiar to most people.  This course will focus on nonviolent direct action as a principled method of addressing conflict and as a strategy to balance power, raise awareness and move toward a transformation or resolution of social conflict. 

Mubarak Awad was deported by the Israeli Supreme Court in 1988 after being jailed for organizing activities involving nonviolent civil disobedience and is the founder of the Palestinian Center for the Study of Nonviolence in Jerusalem, Palestine and Nonviolence International.  Mubarak brings a wealth of experience to the discussion of nonviolence and the challenges of our time.

Collaboratively and Culturally Responsive Partnerships

How do we work together respectfully across broad diversity?  This course will focus on the dynamics of facilitating collaborative processes within multi-sector groups, community development contexts, and developing skills and theories for adapting to the cultural needs within the conflict environment.  Participants will have the opportunity to explore a combination of theory, case studies and hands-on application.  Wendy Kroeker has been teaching, mediating and training for over 15 years in a variety of contexts in South and Southeast Asia, in  South America and throughout Manitoba.  She is one of Canadian Mennonite Univeristy’s own instructors, former Co-Director of the Canadian School of Peacebuilding and is an associate trainer for the Resolution Skills Centre in Winnipeg.  This course is offered in partnership with Resolution Skills Center (RSC) and Mediation Services and counts towards the RSC certificate.
