This course will introduce students to the literary, historical and theological study of Ezra, Chronicles, and Nehemiah, the final works of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Historically, they take us from the establishment of the monarchy through the exile and return to the land and the inauguration of the Second Temple period. This course will follow a thematic approach, asking important questions regarding the role of prophets and priest as well as what the “perfect community” looks like for the returning community in these narrative histories, which will also give us occasion to look at Ruth, Esther and Daniel as well. The course is intended to foster the student’s development of a personal, loving relationship with God while at the same time providing a solid scriptural foundation for later theological studies.
Sandee Collins holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh with a concentration in Jewish Studies as well as master’s degrees in church history and library science. She is currently Academic Dean and faculty in Biblical Studies at the Byzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh, PA. Sandee has taught biblical courses and general religion classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Her dissertation, “Weapons Upon Her Body: The Female Heroic in the Hebrew Bible” is slated for publication by Cambridge Scholars Press in late 2011.
This course qualifies for the Advanced Anglican Series in the area of Scripture. 2 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available.
