The Use of the Old Testament in the New Testament – Online

One of the most obvious features of the New Testament is its thoroughgoing appeal to Israel’s Scriptures. However, the use of such texts has troubled later readers from the very earliest post-apostolic period and has led to subsequent interpreters offering a wide range of possible explanations and developments. Gain clarity on this important issue through a) reading a cross section of essays illustrating various approaches, and b) examining in detail the use of the OT throughout a range of documents in the NT. Attention will given to the various ways in which OT texts, images, and motifs are appropriated by NT authors as they seek to explain the significance of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus in the context of first century understandings of OT expectation. Gain insight into the essential continuity of Israel’s Scriptures and the New Testament and into the fundamental structures of the biblical theology that shaped the earliest church. The seminar format facilitates greater interaction and student participation.
