Howard Thurman was one of the greatest of
North American mystic/prophets. His influence
was significant since he and his wife visited Gandhi
in India in 1935 and brought back Gandhi’s
non violent teachings to America. His teachings
were so important to Dr Martin Luther King, jr.,
that he brought Thurman’s book, “Jesus and
the Disinherited” with him every time he went
to jail (39 times). Thurman was instructed by
the Quaker Rufus Jones as a young man in the
spirituality of both Francis of Assisi and Meister
Eckhart.

He pursues deeply the Four Paths of Creation
Spirituality with his love of solitude and nature;
his teaching of silence and letting go; his commitment
to creativity (he wrote an entire book
on black spirituals as spiritual/political songs),
his commitment to social justice. He was also a
pioneer in deep ecumenism and was critical of
the institutional church.

We will explore Thurman’s deep spirituality but
also that of other justice-oriented mystics as well
such as Dorothee Soelle and Thomas Merton and
poet Mary Oliver and others who speak to issues
of eco justice and social justice today–all with
the purpose of deepening our own mystical/prophetic
vocations: Our Yes to Life and our No to
injustice.
