THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW: PREACHING THROUGH “THE CHURCH’S GOSPEL” IN YEAR A

In the Gospel according to Matthew, Jesus speaks words of deep comfort(“Blessed are the poor in spirit”) and words of stringent judgment (“Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness”). It’s a Gospel that speaks, sometimes in stark ways, about the fragility of faith, the importance of Christian community and the threats lurking in human nature and religious arrogance. Spend an afternoon reacquainting yourself with this rich and challenging Gospel, its portrait of Jesus Christ the teacher and fulfillment of the law, and its focus on equipping the church to navigate a sometimes confusing existence in an often hostile world. We will explore Matthew’s narrative structure, its parables, its theological emphases and how it might resonate with life and ministry today. Our aim will be to consider how a year’s worth of lectionary-guided sermons and educational opportunities can bring this Gospel to life, giving people a fresh encounter with the Jesus to whom it still bears witness.
