Preaching is one of the central tasks of Christian ministers, and one that will grow and change throughout the preacher’s lifetime. This course provides an introduction to the craft of preaching through an exploration of its theological foundations, the process of Biblical exegesis for preaching, and methods of sermon preparation. Students will develop their skills in writing and delivering sermons, as well as in reflecting critically on the task of preaching. Finally, students will work to apply their critical skills to their own preaching. The course will involve theological reflection, Biblical exegesis, and preaching assignments in a worshipping community.
INSTRUCTOR
The Rev. Dr. Hilary Bogert-Winkler is Director of Pastoral Studies at Montreal Dio. She has a decade of ordained ministry experience at the parish and diocesan levels and a doctorate in church history with a focus on liturgical development.

COURSE DETAILS
CREDIT: This is a 3-credit course. It is not possible to audit this course. Space is limited and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
PREREQUISITE: The basic prerequisite for credit courses applies, namely a previous undergraduate degree in any subject with a 2.7 CGPA or equivalent experience. In addition, this course requires students to have completed previous coursework in Scripture. If this coursework cannot be demonstrated on an academic transcript, applicants may provide a written explanation of the work done in, for example, Education for Ministry. Students are also required to have a connection to a ministry setting—congregational or otherwise—in which the student can preach twice over the course of the semester. Finally, students are also required to have the ability to record sermons (both audio and video are required) and to share these recordings with the class.

- Why are you interested in taking this course? What do you hope to gain from your participation?
- Have you preached regularly in a ministry environment before? If so, how do you see this course en- riching your preaching? If not, do you have plans to preach regularly somewhere in the future, either as a lay or ordained person?
- Where will you preach your tutorial sermons, and in what capacity (i.e. lay reader, intern, guest preacher, etc.)? Will this be your regular worshipping community?
This course is open to people engaged in lay or ordained ministry, those preparing for ministry, or those looking for continuing ministerial education.
