Poetry, Politics, and the Life of the Spirit.

Tuesday, October 31 – Friday, November 3, 2017

Led by Marilyn McEntyre

This retreat will the explore relationships among three dimensions of our life of faith in a series of talks entitled Poetry, Politics, and Spiritual Practice. What we read—especially when we read formatively and imaginatively—how we participate in public life, and how we enter into and deepen prayer, worship, and other spiritual practices are closely related realms of choice. It is her hope that these talks will help move us toward and mutual encouragement as we seek ways to equip one another for discerning and faithful lives in a time of political tensions, economic anxieties, and dwindling literacy.

Marilyn McEntyre, longtime professor of American literature and medical humanities, is author of a number of books, two of which are especially pertinent to the topic of this retreat: Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies and Word by Word: A Daily Spiritual Practice. She is currently Adjunct Professor of Medical Humanities at UC Berkeley and a Fellow at the Gaede Institute, Westmont College, and serves as an active hospice volunteer.
