There are blue seas, blue skies, blue jeans and blue eyes, you could be feeling a little blue or be a true blue friend. In the natural world there is a huge range of blue in the sky and seas.   In this 4 day workshop we will celebrate “the colour of heaven” and explore a selection of stitching techniques, both by hand and machine.  There will be an indigo vat brewing during our time together and using shibori, folded resist and Katazome techniques create unique multi layered patterns on fabrics.  We will also be developing stitched designs using  pojagi, boro and kantha techniques.  Students are welcome to approach this course as a series of samples and explorations or work with intention towards a goal. As always design will form a big part our study and samples have a way of coming together to create a unique textile masterpiece.

Catherine Nicholls is a painter, writer, teacher and quilt-maker. Inspired by legends, stories and words in general her work is developed through drawing, painting and mixed media work in sketchbooks. When working with textile, dyeing, drawing, painting and printing are some of her favourite techniques. Heavy stitch by hand or machine is a big part of Catherine’s work.   Catherine now lives and works in Gibsons, B.C. and draws inspiration from the natural world, her travels and the people she meets along the way. Stories, legends and the history of people, place and culture provide are the raw materials for themed exhibitions worldwide.
