Men’s Knitting Retreat: All About Cables

Led By: Br. Aidan Owen, OHC
Suggested Donation: $390

Thursday, 06 February – Sunday, 09 February 2020

Come join us for our first ever men’s knitting retreat!

What better way to stay cozy in the grey winter months than knitting in the company of other men? We’ll enjoy a relaxed weekend of socializing, knitting, and learning together in what we hope will become an annual tradition, all while surrounded by the beauty of the Hudson Valley in winter.

Br. Aidan, better known online as the Knitting Monk, and a cable knitting enthusiast will walk us through the basics of cable knitting. We’ll cover yarn and pattern selection, simple and more complex cable motifs, and how to ditch your cable needle. Those new to cable knitting will get to practice their skills with the Skiff Hat, designed by Jared Flood. More experienced cable knitters can join the Skiff knit-along or bring their own projects. Even if you have zero interest in learning cable knitting, you’re still welcome to come and enjoy the camaraderie of male knitters.

A few special notes to those new to the Monastery:

  • All who identify as men are welcome on this retreat.
  • The Monastery is welcoming to and affirming of all LGBTQ/queer/SGL persons. Shared accommodation is available for couples.
  • The suggested donation for the retreat includes all accommodation and meals.
  • All guests are welcome to attend the services in the church, and no one is required to do so.

Br. Aidan, known in the fiber world as the Knitting Monk, is crazy about cables. He seeks to bring a contemplative and ecological approach to all his fiber work. When not knitting, he’s the Monastery’s Guestmaster and Groundskeeper. He also practices sewing, quilting, natural dyeing, writing, and gardening. When asked whether he spins, he always replies “not yet.” You can find his Ravelry page here, his writing here, and past episodes of his fiber arts podcast here.
