Appropriate Boundaries in Ministry

As ministers, any abuse of our power and position causes substantial harm to those we serve–whether that abuse is sexual, financial, or relational. This class will examine:
1.the damaging effects of child abuse, sexual harassment, clergy misconduct and other interpersonal abuse;
2.individual and corporate strategies for maintaining pastoral boundaries and protecting the vulnerable in our midst; and
3.the spiritual dynamics of healing which can guide recovery.
All class members receive certificates that meet the child abuse and clergy sexual misconduct prevention requirements of several denominations.
Also offered for academic credit.

Addictions, 12-Steps and the Church
Dr. Merrill Swiney
9:00am-1:00pm in CDSP 225
This course is a broad study of addictive patterns, how they grow out of family systems, and how they affect the Church. As a theological exploration of 12-Step spirituality, this course will require attendance at recovery meetings in addition to the daily discussion and lecture. Past students have consistently commended this course for both practical knowledge and personal growth. Pass/Fail only.

Tuesday, January 17 – Friday, January 20
Congregational Ministry Development
The Rev. Dcn. Phina Borgeson
T/TH from 9:00am-3:00pm; W/F from 9:00am-1:00pm in CDSP 116
This course functions as an introduction to developing congregations as ministering communities. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the vision and current practice of local ministry development in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada. They will also explore the vision, values and skills involved in this work, especially as it relates to change in congregations, church systems and church culture. A variety of adult education methods will be used: reading, case studies, conversations with those involved with ministry development at the local level, practice in working collaboratively, and reflection on experience. Assessment will be based on class participation.
