One of the most cherished images in the early Celtic Christian world is the memory of John the Beloved leaning against Jesus at the last supper. It was said of him that he thus heard the heartbeat of God. He became a symbol of the practice of listening, listening for the beat of the Sacred deep within ourselves, within one another and within the body of the earth. This spiritual tradition has many resonances with Native American spirituality and the wisdom of indigenous peoples throughout the world. In our signature week at Ghost Ranch we will honor this wisdom and look to the treasure of Celtic spirituality as a rich resource for transformation in our lives and world today.

Our days will consist of prayer at the rising of the sun in Ghost Ranch’s Agape Center courtyard, teaching and sharing in the mornings and evenings and rest and silence in the afternoons John Philip Newell (Author) and Ali Newell (University Chaplain) will lead this week along with David Poole (Musician) and Winona Poole (Teacher). They are all long-time friends of Ghost Ranch and have worked together creatively through word and song over many summers.

John Philip Newell

The Rev. Dr. John Philip Newell is a poet, peacemaker, and scholar, internationally acclaimed for his work in the field of Celtic spirituality. In 2011 he received the Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute

Ali Newell

Ali Newell is a Church of Scotland minister and serves as Associate Chaplain at the University of Edinburgh. She and her husband John Philip Newell are parents of four children and live in Edinburgh.

David Poole

David Poole is the music director at La Mesa Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. He is the founder of de Profundis, an a cappella men’s ensemble, which has released its second commercial recording. He also directed

Winona Poole

Winona Poole, teacher and published playwright, has been teaching drama since 1989. She has written over 40 plays and published 6. She began teaching in high schools, coaching drama clubs and taking students to drama

Please note that our workshop price structure packages your tuition, course materials, lodging and meals together in a single rate. Prices are presented for each of the types of lodging available for the workshop you select. All rates are Per Person, Double Occupancy unless otherwise specified.

Single Occupancy: Single occupancy rooms may be reserved for an additional $50 per night when space is available. The fee will be charged when space is confirmed. Single occupancy lodging is generally not available during June and July. If you are a single person and do not specify a roommate, a roommate of the same gender will be assigned to share your lodging space or you can request the single occupancy and be charged the supplement of an additional $50 per night (based on availability).
