Throughout the traditional denominations of the western church the word ‘change’ both unites and polarises people. There is general agreement that some things should change, but which things – music, liturgy, buildings, organisational structures?  And when it comes to alternatives there is rarely unanimity.  Yet, at the centre of the Christian faith is a God who changes (???), a Saviour who is resurrected, and a Spirit intended to make all things new.

So, rather than become embroiled in the detail of which colour to paint the women’s restroom, in this retreat we will look at the anatomy of change and of resistance, identifying ways in which people – including ourselves – can understand and enable change to happen. Good examples of effective practice from round the globe will be discussed.

John L. Bell is a member of the Iona Community’s Wild Goose Resource group, which engages with the public through participation in conferences and events throughtout the UK and abroad.  With his colleagues, he has produced collections of original songs, compilations of music from the World Church, and books of worship resources and sermons.
