The Institute for the healing of Memories seeks to contribute to the healing journey of individuals, communities and nations. Our work is grounded in the belief that we are all in need of healing because of what we have done, what we have failed to do, and what has been done to us.

Specifically the course aims to introduce participants to:

  • Facilitating / co- facilitating Healing of Memories workshops and second phase workshop
  • Theory and practice of the history of the healing of memories workshop design and   training

Programme include:

  • Exploring the philosophy and work of the Institute of the Healing of memories and national healing frameworks
  • Advance Healing of Memories workshop skills training with a focus on listening skills and giving and receiving feedback.
  • Explore themes of restorative justice, healing and social cohesion.
  • Visit a local community and explore models of community healing.

Fr. Michael Lapsley, founding member and Director of the IHOM will be the lead facilitator on the course. IHOM facilitators take a participatory approach, emphasising experiential learning. In addition to the full-time tutors, resource specialists from external institutions will conduct sessions on particular topics.

Applicants who had completed the Introduction to the Healing of Memories training will be considered for the training.

A non-refundable deposit of US$ 500 is required to secure a place upon acceptance.

Fees must be paid in full one month before the start of the course. The cancellation fee of 25% is applicable up to 2 weeks before and thereafter will be 75%.

A list of accommodation options will be made available to participants upon acceptance to the course. Participants are responsible for their own accommodation arrangements. The course fees include the cost of the residential Healing of Memories workshop.

We suggest participants should allow US$ 250 to cover personal expenses within South Africa and need to arrange their own medical insurance.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure they have all necessary funds before travelling to South Africa.

Limited funds are available to support those unable to raise the full fees. Scholarships will be awarded primarily on the basis of the context the applicant and their need for such training. Other factors taken into account include prior experience, diversity of applicants (age, gender, nationality, experience etc) and the demonstrated commitment and motivation of applicants.
