ICONOGRAPHY: The Gospel in Line and Color
February 15, 2014 – February 21, 2014
Optional February 14 Early Arrival
Extend your retreat for an extra day! Arrive on Feb. 14 and Kanuga will provide lodging, breakfast and lunch.
Painting an icon can be a compelling experience. Using techniques developed at the end of the Iconoclast period (before the year 1000 A.D.), the painter sees a face gradually emerge from the darkness, a face glowing with an internal light.
The process has less to do with your ability to paint than with your willingness to let go and trust. All are invited to experience this joy, with no art experience required.
Icons will be made using the traditional materials of egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed panels.
Students can choose to paint an icon of the Nativity or an icon of the Archangel Gabriel.
Days begin with an early morning Eucharist followed by an anointing of hands in the studio. Noonday prayers are said before lunch and each day ends with evening prayer in Kanuga’s Chapel of the Transfiguration.
Take a break from your art for walking in the woods, chatting with friends over coffee or reading by the fire. Come join us for a week of painting, prayer and fun!
