The most common form of “jazz” in human experience is conversation – an activity we engage in every hour, every day, at work. It’s how we connect, treat each other and exchange ideas. But do we use it to create harmony or discord, collaboration or conflict, win-lose or win-win outcomes? And do we express our “true voices,” or hold ourselves back to meet the expectations of others?
Developed by Brian Fraser over the past 10 years, “working SMARTer” is about being more Soulful, Mindful, Astute, Responsible and Trusting at work. It’s also listening to the ‘spirit within’ so that we:
– draw on the best in ourselves
– cultivate positive relations with others
– make wiser decisions
– generate mutual accountability & support, and
– monitor & measure continuous improvement
to make our work more effective and successful.

| About Our Speaker:The Rev. Dr. Brian Fraseris an executive coach, facilitator, consultant and speaker for organizations of all kinds – where he uses the lessons of jazz to provoke people to “generate vibes that create value.” Based in North Vancouver, his clients have included Toyota Canada, the North Shore Credit Union, Vancity, Service Coordination Incorporated, ICBC, BC Hydro, Fraser Health, Providence Health, BC Conference of the United Church of Canada, the United Churches of Burnaby, various BC government agencies, and several universities and colleges in the Lower Mainland of BC. Brian has been involved with ‘workplace spirituality’ for over 20 years. From 1985 – 2001, he was dean of St. Andrew’s Hall, the Presbyterian College at the University of British Columbia, and professor of history at Vancouver School of Theology. His research focused on leadership and organizational cultures. He’s also been a Director and regular speaker with Vancouver’s Workplace Centre for Spiritual and Ethical Development.
A firm believer in continuous learning, Brian maintains an active involvement in the following communities of practice: Canadian Association of Professional Speakers, the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, the International Society for Performance Improvement, the International Coach Federation and the British Columbia Organizational Development Network. He teaches coaching at Douglas College in Coquitlam, BC, and also ministers part-time with Brentwood Presbyterian Church in Burnaby, BC.

About Our Musicians:
The Tom Reynolds Trio
features Tom Reynolds on piano, George Koller on bass and Lorne Nehring on drums. Each week, the Trio brings a strong jazz presence to Sunday services at St. Andrew’s United Church in Toronto. A gifted jazz pianist and composer, Tom is also a Professor of Theology at Emmanuel College, University of Toronto, and writes extensively on the subject of jazz and spirituality.
