This course will trace the development of gospel music from the 18th century to today. From the camp meeting and revival songs of Moody and Sankey, the creation of slave songs, call and response, and spirituals up to present-day Black gospel. In-class performance, examples from lecturer, and various guests.
G. Mysticism in Postmodern Times

What does it mean to say we live in postmodern times? How is mysticism relevant? In this course we will explore the relationship between these frequently misunderstood concepts, and how they both present invigorating possibilities for understanding ourselves, the world we live in, and the world we want.
H. The Ten Commandments

This ten-week course will delve into the intricate meaning and application of each of the 10 Commandments (literally, 10 Statements). The goal is to more fully appreciate why these seemingly basic regulations are actually the profound foundation of faith

OSTS students come largely from four sponsoring denominations but others proclaim the Christian message too. This course offers their varying points of view. Lectures will be given by representatives of different denominations including: Alliance, Baptist, Christian Science, Jehovah?s Witnesses, Lutheran, Mennonite, Quaker, Pentecostal, and others
J. Dys-connected? How Technology is Affecting our Relationships

Electronic technology and the internet are becoming increasingly immersive and invasive. Numerous studies are emerging with observations on how technology may be affecting attitudes, faith, relationships, personality, and even the structure of our brain. This course provides a forum for exploring and discussing these findings.
K. Grief: The Universal Crisis

Grief can rob us of happiness and peace. Wide-ranging losses such as job loss, declining health, depression, family issues, and unhealthy boundaries can find us living through times of great emotional pain. These interactive sessions will enable participants to better understand how to go forward in the midst of pain and grief
