The Cistercian World: Then & Now
Tuesday, January 31 to Friday, February 3
Led by Esther de Waal
This retreat will explore the Cistercian way of life, as expressed in writings and buildings from its 12th century origins to the present day scene [in America and worldwide]. Spiritual writings will include 12th century Abbots Bernard of Clairvaux and Aelred of Rievaulx as well as contemporary Cistercians Thomas Merton and Michael Casey.
Special attention will be paid to historical technological innovation as well as the ecological and environmental issues faced by Cistercian monastics in the modern world. Join us to explore the most important dimensions, through a Cistercian lens, of our spiritual path — including simplicity, growth, knowledge, integration, and the sharing of love.
Esther de Waal is the author of many books; among them are classics on monastic spirituality. She lives in a small cottage on the Welsh/English border, is a gardener and grandmother, and travels to lead retreats and give lectures. Esther is a Companion of the Order of Holy Cross.
