Aging is a challenge unless, as the poet William Butler Yeats writes,
“Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing
For every tatter in its mortal dress…”

Many folks in our congregations are in the stage of life in which they are experiencing the “tatters in their mortal dress.” This workshop is designed to help ministry people and lay leaders understand the spiritual and psychological work of aging. Together, we will learn how to assist the elder members of our congregations in empowering their souls to “sing, and louder sing”, despite the losses and challenges of their elder years. In circle and individually, we will learn about and try the soul practices that lead to a heart of wisdom in old age. Through scripture, poetry, guided meditation, art, the sharing of stories in circle, and insights from the workshop leader, we will begin to understand the inner work of becoming conscious in elderhood and how best to facilitate it for others.

Rev. Dr. Anne Beattie-Stokes has been an ordained minister of the United Church of Canada since 1979 and is presently in ministry with the people of White Oaks United Church in London, Ontario. Anne is passionate about the transformative journey of Christian faith, and loves to use art, metaphor, story, wisdom circles, and nature to help people connect to their own deep gifts and calling. Anne is the author of A Heart of Wisdom: Inspiration and Instruction for Conscious Elderhood. Through photography, art, poetry, and simple prose, her book offers instruction in the various spiritual and psychological tasks of the elder years of life, and inspiration for waking up to the depths of one’s own journey in elderhood.
