Purpose and Focus:

This is an intensive, ecumenical, home based program in spiritual guidance and spiritual deepening. It is for those who wish to discern more clearly the gift of and practice of spiritual guidance and to deepen their own contemplative presence with God in daily life.

“Spirituality consists of an experienced and interpreted relationship among human beings and the mystery of creation.” – Gerald May, Will and Spirit.

Spiritual Guidance:

Spiritual guidance and direction is the art of assisting another person notice and respond to the presence and leading of God, (“God” by any other name: creator, great spirit, father/mother, higher power, inner light, holy spirit, inner teacher, the holy, etc.), in the middle of ordinary life. It is an ancient tradition taking on current form with the assistance of twenty-first century knowledge, skills, and language.

“The great thing in prayer is not to pray, but to go directly to God. If saying your prayers is an obstacle to prayer, cut it out! Let Jesus pray… let prayer pray within you.” –
Thomas Merton

Spiritual Deepening:

This program is rooted in the practice of prayer in the Christian contemplative tradition. This contemplative way encourages spiritual practice, routines of reverence, which assist recognition and response to God’s presence and leadership in the current moments of everyday life.

“in prayer, the ‘end’ is not some imagined degree of contemplation, or a mystical experience that will tell us we’ve arrived, but joys and sorrows, births and deaths, successes and failures, misunderstandings and reconciliations… and through it all a constant growth in oneness and maturing love, in a life shared from beginning to end.” – Thelma Hall.

Deadline for application: October 31, 2005
