Songs of Transformation, Reformation, and Liberation

with Paul Vasile

As we look to songs of the past and music of today, what do they have to teach us about the power of music to shape congregational life, especially how we worship? In this interactive course, singers of all backgrounds and skill levels will be invited to experience music from a tapestry of cultures and musical traditions and reflect on:

community singing as a practice that forms and transforms identity through listening and collaboration;
holistic practices of music leadership that can help strengthen and liberate voices;
teaching strategies useful for introducing music in worship, rehearsals, and other community contexts.

PAUL VASILE is a church musician, consultant, and composer based in New York City. A multitalented musician and dynamic worship leader, he is committed to building, renewing, and re-shaping faith communities through music and liturgy. As the Executive Director of Music that Makes Community, Paul is passionate about modeling and sharing leadership practices that sustain the musical and spiritual life of faith communities. He provides support and resources to an international network of leaders committed to practices of oral tradition singing, grounded in a theology of welcome and generosity. Paul is an inspiring teacher and has been a guest lecturer and worship leader at Union Theological Seminary, General Theological Seminary (NYC), the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Princeton Theological Seminary, and The Candler School of Theology. He has also curated notable concert series, arts events, and educational programs exploring the intersection of music and spirituality.
