Shabbat: Simple Acts of Cosmic Healing
with Rabbi Laura Duhan-Kaplan

Just once a week: take a day off work and school, share dinner with family and friends, sing songs of praise to God. Jewish tradition teaches that these simple acts inspire spiritual lives, create family harmony, encourage workplace equality and heal the planet. Together we will explore traditional Shabbat practices, their biblical roots, their mystical significance, and their far-reaching effects. We will use simple but powerful modes of learning that involve both heart and mind: singing, walking, talking, writing, sitting together in silence, and sharing our varied spiritual backgrounds with one another.

Rabbi Laura Duhan-Kaplan is Director of Inter-Religious Studies at the Vancouver School of Theology. Laura has been a lifelong practitioner of the Jewish Sabbath, enhancing her practice with studies in philosophy, Kabbalah, and Spiritual Direction. Laura, a former philosophy professor and synagogue rabbi, is a Carnegie Foundation U.S. Professor of the Year. She lives in Vancouver with her husband Charles, psychologist and musician. Together they enjoy parenting young adult children, leading musical worship services, hiking, and caring for a changing array of companion animals. Follow Laura’s blog at www.sophiastreet.com
