Mountain Music:  Highland Balladry in Appalachia and Ephraim

Hosted by Andover Newton Theological School, Newton Center, Massachusetts, and sponsored by AMERC

This course involves a twelve-day immersion in southeastern and south-central Kentucky and will explore the poetic quality of biblical prophecy and the divine tones in the folk music of Appalachia.  From Berea, Ky, we will have classroom learning experiences and make day trips in Central Kentucky.  In the Hindman area, we will participate in Family Folk Week, worship in European and African-American churches, and learn about Appalshop.  In and from Campbellsville, we will visit a Mennonite community, Shakertown, and the Cisterican monastery of Gethsemani in Nelson County.

We will discuss ways in which societal injustice, patriarchal bias, and the hope and ideals of a people in the Israelite prophetic context are paralleled, amplified, and illumined by the contemporary context of Appalachia, through juxtaposition with the folk music and hymns that draw attention to struggles, but also nurture hope.

Date: June 5-June 16, 2016

The course will have three case camps:  Berea College, Berea, KY; the Hindman Settlement School, Hindman, KY, and Campbellsville, KY.

Cost: $1,000

Deadline for application:  March 1, 2015; Deadline for payment:  April 1, 2015.
