This intermediate seminar presupposes a rudimentary background in applying Bowen Family Systems Theory to congregational leadership. It is a continuing education opportunity for pastors or other church leaders in systems thinking and a Beyond the Basics opportunity for interim/transitional ministers after weeks 1 and 2 training. It offers safety to step back and reflect on one’s own leadership. The history of the congregation may include conflict, dysfunction, chronic anxiety, misconduct, etc., affecting its ongoing life. But the leader’s relationship to family of origin affects the leadership style and thus the organization.
James Roghair served 9 years as interim pastor in 3 denominations. He was certified as a PCUSA interim ministry specialist in 2004. Healthy congregations training with Bowen family systems theory, conflict management/mediation training, and sexual misconduct prevention/follow-up are areas of expertise. Informing his teaching is broad pastoral experience of 40 years — including inner city African-American, Alaska Iñupiaq (Eskimo) and suburban white churches.
