Students enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Ministry receive a foundational understanding of ministry equipping them for broad service to the church. Required courses include theology or history; Bible; and two Preaching and Communications, Introduction to Caring Ministry, or other Ministry Studies courses.

Ministry certificate grads may elect to later complete the Seminary’s Master of Divinity or Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies degree program. Additionally, the certificate is ideal for persons serving churches or congregations as Sunday School teachers, deacons, and elders, plus women and men who want to expand their knowledge of Scripture or gain a foundation for practical ministry.

Completing the Certificate in Ministry Program

Taking two classes per semester, the Certificate in Ministry can be completed in one year. Students may also elect to take one course per semester and complete the program in two years. For those taking evening courses, the program can be completed over two academic years. This flexible certificate program easily fits students’ busy schedules.

Applying to the Certificate in Ministry Program

Students interested in this certificate program must complete Pittsburgh Theological Seminary’s standard application for admission process, and will ordinarily have an undergraduate degree.
