Coming Together for Reconciliation
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission delivered 94 calls to action in their report on June 2nd, 2015. This retreat will bring us together to begin work on recommendation 59 in the report from the Truth and Reconciliation Committee:
59. We call upon church parties to the Settlement Agreement to develop ongoing education strategies to ensure that their respective congregations learn about their church’s role in colonization, the history and legacy of residential schools, and why apologies to former residential school students, their families, and communities were necessary.
In the course of the weekend we will learn about the history, context and legacy of residential schools and develop action planning within our church and community organizations for involvement in acts of reconciliation.
The program will include a visit to the former Mohawk Institute residential school and time spent with residential school survivors from Six Nations. We will also engage with issues around treaties and land claims.
Leadership: The program will be led by staff, board members and friends of Nations Uniting, a ministry of the United Church of Canada located on Six Nations.
Presenters will include: Phil Montour, Lands Researcher, Six Nations of the Grand River
Dates: Friday, November 11, 2016 starting at 5:30PM with dinner to Sunday, November 13 ending with lunch at 12:30PM.
Cost: $195 (includes meals and accommodations)
