Canadian Foodgrains Bank food security learning tour to Nicaragua

August 2, 2016 - August 14, 2016
Winnipeg MB
Canada

Are you a teacher, educator, or someone who works with youth?

Join us in Nicaragua this summer!

We’re inviting applications for our food security learning tour to Nicaragua designed specifically for educators.

Tour participants will visit Foodgrains Bank projects, engage with small-scale farmers, expand their knowledge and understanding of hunger and food security, and gain awareness of the livelihoods of rural farmers in Nicaragua. Included in the tour is a homestay with a Nicaraguan farm family and a river excursion through the Northern Autonomous region, visiting Indigenous communities.

*Note: Though we will be well cared for, we will sometimes be in isolated areas with rustic accommodations and basic transportation and we will often be outdoors, subject to varying weather conditions.

This is an opportunity for educators to learn firsthand about global hunger, and gain knowledge that they can share with their students and use to develop and strengthen lesson plans. Topics covered include: food security, small-scale agriculture, techniques for teaching hunger and global issues, different models of development, and global citizenship.

Activities during this two-week tour include exchanges with communities, government representatives, and other actors in the area of hunger and nutrition, visits to local marketplaces and debriefing sessions.

Prior to leaving, an orientation will take place where participants will learn more about Canadian Foodgrains Bank and prepare for the cultural experience on which they are embarking.

Upon returning to Canada, participants will be expected to:

• Share their experience with students and others (educators, youth, etc.) in their communities,
• Promote the Good Soil campaign materials (for example, distributing postcards), (and)
• Keep in contact with the Foodgrains Bank for at least one year
