April 2, 2013Dear Friends,
Father Michael will conduct the only Healing of Memories workshop in the New York area this year on May 3-5, 2013. He is a world renowned leader in the area of reconciliation who has developed a unique methodology.
Nelson Mandela has said of him, “Michael’s life represents a compelling metaphor:…a foreigner who came to our country and was transformed… (His) life is part of the tapestry of the many long journeys and struggles of our people.”
What is a Healing
of Memories Workshop?
Healing of Memories workshops are weekend residential experiences held in safe, secure venues and led by trained facilitators. Participants share experiences that might be painful in a spiritual, yet nonsectarian atmosphere of deep listening and mutual respect. Art, music and drama are integral parts of the weekend, which culminates in a communal celebration or ritual devised by the participants themselves that encourages people to look towards the future with hope. Participants are encouraged to describe their situations in the context of the history of their countries and families.
When participants come from diverse social groups, listening to one another’s stories helps to overcome negative perceptions of “the other.” People witness first-hand the thoughts and feelings of people different from themselves. Thus, the very experience that promotes individual healing also encourages empathy, mutual understanding, reconciliation, and a sense of community empowerment.
Details and Information
On Friday evening, supper will be served at 6:00 PM sharp, and the workshop will begin immediately thereafter. Please plan to arrive at least one hour early in order to register and settle into your room before the evening meal.
Maryknoll Sisters can be reachable by car and MetroNorth Hudson Line trains. Volunteers will provide transportation to and from the train station as well as from White Plains airport.
Participants must make a commitment to be present for the entire workshop. We expect that you will stay at convenient and lovely facilities for the weekend, but exceptions can be made. Most rooms are singles with shared bathrooms. There is one suite with private bath.
Cost of the weekend
This year the cost for each participant to $350, but we are urging those who can donate more to do so. This makes it possible for us to turn no one away. Please do not hesitate to ask for a lower fee if you need it.
Because we are limited to 25 participants, early registration is strongly encouraged. A $100 deposit received by April 4 will assure places for the first 25 registrants. Your deposit will be fully refundable until May 20, when the balance of the payment is due.
