Perhaps the most enduring metaphor for the spiritual life is that of journey or voyage. Life is a pilgrimage, and we are all at various places along the way. No one’s journey is ever finished, at least not on this side of eternity. This retreat will explore the theme of voyage/journey by reflecting on an ancient Celtic document, The Voyage of St. Brendan the Navigator, C. S. Lewis’s modern “retelling” of Brendan’s story, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and for a different perspective, Teresa of Avila’s mystical masterpiece The Interior Castle. We’ll reflect on excerpts from each of these spiritual writings, with an eye to recognizing how their journeys of faith can shed light on our own — not only where we’ve been, but perhaps even where we’re going.
