Rest

The never-ending bustle of a high-octane workplace. The three-places-at-once gymnastics of the after-school carpool. The siren’s call of the smartphone. Our lives have become inescapably full. The Church has proven that it, too, is not immune to the culture of over-commitment. Believers in search of rest are often met with a list of volunteer opportunities. So what does Christianity have to say to the “weary and heavy laden”? What might it mean to rest in God’s promises?

Explore these questions from a variety of perspectives utilizing the approach that Mockingbird adopts in all its work, which integrates theology with literature, pop culture, psychology, technology, social science and humor.

Join three long-time contributors to Mockingbird: David Zahl, the Rev. Jady Koch from Louisville, KY, and the Rev. Jacob Smith from NYC. The material will be spiritually edifying, emotionally and intellectually engaging, grace-centered, and, Lord willing, quite fun. Of course, given that this is a Kanuga conference, our prayer is that we not only talk about rest, but experience some as well. Join us!

About Mockingbird

Mockingbird was founded in 2007 by a group of friends in NYC who wanted to reach out to young adults who felt they had been “burned by the church.” From the beginning, the friends wanted flexibility to go where their efforts took them rather than pushing an agenda. They discovered that their website, conferences and publications were getting traction—far beyond the young adult targets. Their current mission is to “connect the Christian faith with the realities of daily life.” For more information, please visit www.mbird.com

David Zahl

David Zahl is the Director of Mockingbird Ministries and editor-in-chief of the Mockingbird blog. Born in New York City, David graduated from Georgetown University in 2001, with honors in German and history. He then served for five years as a youth minister with FOCUS (Fellowship Of Christians in Universities and Schools) in their New England Boarding Schools region. In 2007 he founded Mockingbird in New York City. David and his wife Cate currently reside in Charlottesville, VA with their two boys, Charlie and Cabell, where David also serves on the staff of Christ Episcopal Church, supervising their ministry to students and young adults. He is a licensed lay preacher in the diocese of Virginia, and his writing has appeared in Christianity Today, Modern Reformation and The Dish. His first book, A Mess of Help, appeared in 2014.

The Rev. Dr. John (Jady) Koch, Jr.

A graduate of Washington & Lee and Trinity School for Ministry, he completed his doctorate in Systematic Theology at the University of Humboldt in Berlin. His dissertation, soon to be published, explores the connection between the doctrine of justification by faith and the preaching and teaching ministry of the Church. He spent the first five years of his ordained life working in the Church of England’s Diocese in Europe working in Berlin and Austria. He was called as associate to St. Francis in 2012 and became rector in 2014.

The Rev. Jacob Smith is the priest-in-charge of Calvary-St.George’s in NYC. A cradle Episcopalian, he was educated at the University of Arizona and served as a youth minister before attending Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry.
