If Thomas Merton has not already made your top ten picks, browse the website and links for a good look at what his life and writings are stirring up all over the world.
The Thomas Merton Society of Canada (TMSC) was incorporated in September 2000 after four years as a growing group of readers interested in the work of Thomas Merton. The society’s purpose is to promote a greater knowledge of the life and writings of Thomas Merton, and to provide insight into his spiritual journey and our own.
In addition to hosting public lectures given by notable scholars and readers and writers focused on Merton, the TMSC organizes conferences, retreats and other events where those interested in Thomas Merton can gather to learn more and discuss this very important twentieth century writer and spiritual influence. The TMSC also co-sponsors a biennial pilgrimage to Merton’s birthplace in Prades, France. Several of its members offer courses on Merton at Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, Trinity Western University, and the Chalmers Institute at the Vancouver School of Theology.
The TMSC maintains a lending library for its members, comprised of 125 audiotapes of Merton’s lectures to novices at the Abbey of Gethsemani on a variety of topics, as well as audio and videotapes about Thomas Merton and monasticism in general.
You can support the work of the TMSC by becoming a member. Benefits of membership include a quarterly newsletter, access to the lending library, discount of fees for retreats and special events, and information on a continuing basis about events connected with Thomas Merton at international, national, regional, and local levels. Annual membership dues are $25.00. The membership year extends from September 1 to August 31.
