The Society of Biblical Literature
About Us:
The Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) supports the critical investigation of the Bible. Founded in 1880, SBL is a member of the American Council of Learned Societies. The Society provides conversation partners and resources for those interested in the religions, history, literature, and culture of the ancient Near Eastern world.
Over 6,000 members from every continent provide a forum to test ideas and advance the understanding of the Bible’s role in the public arena.
Mission, Visions, and Values
The following Mission Statement and Strategic Vision Statements were adopted by the SBL Council May 16, 2004.
Mission Statement:
Foster Biblical Scholarship — A simple, comprehensive statement that encompasses the Society’s aspirations.
Strategic Vision Statements:
Offer members opportunities for mutual support, intellectual growth, and professional development as teachers and scholars
Organize congresses for scholarly exchange
Facilitate broad and open discussion from a variety of perspectives
Encourage study of biblical literature and its cultural contexts
Collaborate with educational institutions and other appropriate organizations to support biblical scholarship and teaching
Develop resources for diverse audiences, including students, religious communities and the general public
Publish biblical scholarship
