Discovering Islam: October 15th – 21st, 2017
Join us for discoveries in the depth and beauty of Islam in one of its most foundational and holy cities! During this week, you will have the opportunity to learn about Islam’s history and development, encounter the Quran and prophetic traditions, approach Muslim forms of worship, and get a feel for rhythms of a Muslim pious life. You will experience the Muslim tradition through its various facets such as architecture, archaeology, science, arts, jurisprudence, philosophy, theology, and politics. You will be exposed to these facets through various media such as site visits, lectures by local Muslim scholars, films, exhibits, crafts, and foods. For example, you will have the privilege of visiting Islam’s third holiest site, the Noble Sanctuary (Al-Haram Al-Sharif) in Jerusalem, as well as other sacred sites. Throughout the week, you will have the chance to reflect on the vitality of dialogue and the value in building relationships between Christians and Muslims within our contemporary global condition. You will also have the honor of meeting Msg Michael Fitzgerald, former President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue at the Vatican from 2002-2006. Joining us throughout the week will be Dr. Khaled Furani, anthropologist, who will help guide our various activities and be at the ready to answer questions and engage in conversation.
