In writing and conversation alike, we refer to the words of others. From movie quotes, to proverbs, to song lyrics, our vocabulary is shaped by our cultural references. The authors of the New Testament made cultural references too—and their most common source was Scripture.

This course provides an introduction to how New Testament authors make and use quotations and allusions to Scripture. To do this, the course will:

1. Provide definitions and a survey of common challenges (e.g., variations between Greek and Hebrew traditions).

2. Discuss how our own interpretive approaches influence our understanding of ancient uses of Scripture.

3. Provide frameworks for our own use of Scripture in our ministry and devotional lives.

4. Examine some potentially puzzling passages along the way.
