Pastoral Leadership
in Funerals and
Memorial Services
WITH EVENT FACILITATOR REV. JOHN FORSTER
Friday, January 19 from 5:00
PM – 9:00 PM and
Saturday, January 20 from 9:00
AM – 4:00 PM
This Focus on Practice unit is intended to help you to navigate the challenging
terrain of funerals and memorial services. These celebrations
present the very real need for comfort and support as they are often accompanied
by heightened emotions and the frequent appearance of previously
unnamed family dynamics. The minister’s contact with the family
may also be a rare occasion of pastoral care and opportunity for the individual
involved to look at life through.
By the time you complete this Focus on Practice event, you will have:
?an overview of the actions and process of care for an individual or
family from the time the pastor receives a call identifying that a death
has occurred, until the post-funeral/memorial service follow-up
?a tool box of practical resources (hard-copy/online or bibliographic)
for the preparation of funerals or memorial services
?several detailed frames for shaping and leading a funeral or memorial
service
?an awareness of how to shape a service to address the needs of families
and friends
?practice in preparing various portions of a memorial service
