Parish Nurse Fall Renewal: Through Suffering to Healing

October 13 – 14, 2017 Parish Nursing

As parish nurses, how do we help our clients deal with suffering? What can we say about God, the world and human beings in the face of inexplicable suffering? A biblical scholar (Dr. Kathryn Schifferdecker) and pastoral care practitioner (Dr. Carla Dahl) will use the Book of Job to help us explore biblical, theological and pastoral responses to suffering, loss and grief. We will learn to:

  • Distinguish between helpful and unhelpful responses to persons experiencing loss, grief and suffering.
  • Lead others in theological reflection on the nature of God and humans as related to suffering.
  • Develop a theologically and pastorally grounded approach to ministry with suffering individuals and groups.
  • Discuss the role of Parish/Faith Community Nurses as it relates to physical, emotional and spiritual suffering.
