Gathering annually for mutual support and learning, partners listen together to the explorations and ideas brought by each partner in the spirit of sharing wisdom and questions for growth.
As part of the commitment to life-long learning, the Ministry Developers’ Collaborative identifies and offers tools that enhance growth in this journey of the development of the ministry of all the baptized.
Discerning God’s Call…
A Listening Hearts Experiential Workshop
February 1 and 2, 2018
Stephanie Hull, Senior Program Associate for Listening Hearts Ministries will lead a retreat-style workshop, learning, practicing and reflecting on the art of spiritual discernment. Participants will engage in a discernment process, then reflect on that process of discerning and its use with individuals and in congregations. Intentional dialogue around how discernment skills are useful in one’s individual life and in the life of Christian congregations will help participants know how to take this skill back to their own place and context. One of the basic tools in ministry development in all sized congregations is discernment – helping each other to recognize the call of the Spirit and then supporting this call and the response to this call.

Donald Phillips was born, raised and educated in London, Ontario, Canada. After earning a BSc (hon) and an MSc degree in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Western Ontario, he responded to a call to ordained ministry and obtained a Master of Divinity with Honours degree from Huron College (UWO) in 1981 and was ordained that same year. He served in parish ministry for 11 years – including building a new congregation in Fort McMurray, Alberta. After meeting up with Phina Borgeson and Jim Kelsey, he embraced Total/Mutual ministry development and pioneered this work as Diocesan Ministries Developer (and later Executive Archdeacon) in the Diocese of Qu’Appelle (Canadian Prairies) from 1992 to 2000. Qu’Appelle was one of the original Living Stones Dioceses and Don served as the first elected Chair of the Living Stones Coordinators from 1996 – 98. In 2000 he was elected as 12th Bishop of Rupert’s Land. Since Rupert’s Land was already a member of Living Stones he has been pleased to attend every Annual Meeting of Living Stones since its inception.
For the past 25 years Don has been interested in the development of new forms of local ministry with an emphasis on the priority of the ministry of the baptized. He has presented at conferences and workshops in Canada, USA and Great Britain. Working with the Faculty of Theology at St. John’s College, University of Manitoba, he helped to launch the Diploma in Applied Theology programme, which prepared persons for ordained and non-ordained ministries. Most recently he has promoted Discipleship: discovery, development, deployment as a primary focus and worked with other diocesan leaders to initiate a missional church perspective in the diocese. In 2006 he began part-time postgraduate studies in Christology at the University of Durham, UK, aimed at equipping the “person in the pew” to talk about the Person and work of Jesus Christ in our 21st century western culture. He graduated with a PhD in early 2016.
Donald is married to Nancy, an Occupational Health Nurse, Spiritual Director and adult educator. He has a great love of music, has studied piano, and has sung in choirs and an acappella quartet. He has developed a keen interest in physical fitness over the past 25 years and still teaches a weekly step aerobics class at the downtown YMCA in Winnipeg.
