Karoline LewisWeek 1: Sun, Feb 26  3pm through  Fri, Mar 3 12pm

Presenter: Dr. Karoline Lewis
Seeing God in the Bible: How to Read the Bible for All Its Theological Worth

  • God is the central figure in the Bible, but how do we engage Scripture with God in mind?
  • Who is God?
  • What is God up to?
  • What are some helpful lenses through which to make sense of God’s activity in the Bible and our lives?

Together we will explore the ways in which we might imagine the many characteristics of God and, at the same time, how God wants to reveal God’s very self in our lives.

Karoline Lewis joined the Luther Seminary faculty in 2007 and holds the Marbury Anderson Chair in Biblical Preaching.  A graduate of Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., Karoline received the M.Div. degree from Luther Seminary and the Ph.D. degree in New Testament Studies from Emory University, Atlanta. She has led conferences, workshops, and retreats throughout the country and Canada and is a regularly featured preacher and presenter at the Festival of Homiletics. She is the author of the introduction and study notes for the Gospel of John in The Lutheran Study Bible (Augsburg Fortress, 2009), co-author of New Proclamation: Year B, 2009, Easter through Christ the King (Fortress Press, 2009) as well as articles in The Christian Century, Feasting on the Word, Lutheran Forum, Word and World, and for Odyssey Network’s ON Scripture. Her blog on Passion Sunday for The Christian Century was one of the top ten blog posts of 2011. Her most recent book, John, is published in the Fortress Press Biblical Preaching Commentary Series (2014). Presenter: Rev. Susan Briehl
Praying the Seasons of our Lives

In its wisdom, over generations of lived faith, the Church has nurtured rhythms for our life together. The liturgical calendar draws the faithful ever more deeply into the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Psalms accompany us in every season, on every Sunday, through each day giving us words that  carry our pleading and praise, our sorrow and joy to the heart of God..

Susan Briehl is a Lutheran pastor called to serve the wider church as a writer, a teacher, and the associate director of the Valparaiso Project. Susan has served in teams as pastor of Our Saviour’s in Bellingham, campus pastor at Pacific Lutheran University, and executive director of Holden Village. She is the author of several hymn texts, and with Tom Witt, wrote Holden Prayer Around the Cross. She lives in Spokane with her husband Martin Wells where they keep a porch light on for their grown daughters, Mary Emily and Magdalena
