This course explores the biblical roots of some Jewish and Christian understandings of the spiritual life. Students will examine key biblical texts about vision and transformation, paradise, temple, heavenly throne and celestial liturgy, “rest,” holy war, and bodily discipline – texts that influence later Jewish and Christian devotional, mystical, and ascetical beliefs and practice.
