Icon WritingAn icon is a valuable spiritual aid in prayer, meditation, and contemplation. Learn the ancient art of Byzantine Icon writing using classical painting methods of transfer drawing, egg tempera laying, and gold leaf guilding. In an atmosphere of prayer and meditation, you will encounter the experience of praying and painting an Icon that is at once refreshing and captivating. You do not have to be an artist! Step by step instruction with demonstrations will gently and joyfully shepherd you through the process. Return home with your completed Icon and sacred memories.

In Icon writing, we bring the invisible world of God’s faith and power into our own time and space through prayer and meditation combined with painting.  The evocative nature of natural pigments and gold leaf bestow a beauty that cannot be achieved any other way!”
“The icon writing class proved to be much more than just a painting class.  It was an extended meditation offering a place of respite from all the demands of life. However, as a painting class it was exceptional.  I learned more about classical drawing and painting technique than I learned in any other art class I’ve ever taken, and that is a testament to the talent and experience of the instructor.”  Karen L., A Recent Icon Student

Christine Simoneau Hales

Christine Simoneau Hales, after earning a BFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and painting in NYC for twenty plus years, now has an Icon studio in the Hudson Valley. She teaches Icon “writing” in a skilled and patient way, demonstrating egg tempera and gold leaf gilding while giving individual attention to each student. Teaching the Byzantine method of combining prayer and painting, luminous and exquisite Icons are created. Christine’s beautiful Icons are in many churches and private collections nationally and can be seen other websites: www.iconwritingclasses.com and www.newchristianicons.com
