Rediscovering a Local Sustainable and Spiritual Economy

The idea of a ‘global common good’ implies four things which are increasingly controversial in contemporary political discourse: the ‘global’, the ‘common’, the ‘good’ and the role of human agency. Michael Northcott discusses these elements in light of the current crisis-ridden nature of democratic decision-making in the United Kingdom and the United States, and ongoing pressures from ‘populist’ political movements in continental Europe.

He then considers how a Christian and charitable vision of economy could combine with a vision of the ecology of Mother Earth to generate a renewed understanding of an economy that works for all.

Michael Northcott is Professor of Ethics at the University of Edinburgh and a priest in the Scottish Episcopal Church. His most recent book, Place, Ecology and the Sacred, was published in 2015.
