Associates’ Work/Study Weekend:
Sharing Thanksgiving Abundance

with Dave Wides

This is a time when Associates of the Centre gather to work, pray and celebrate life by creating community and sharing Thanksgiving. There is plenty of fun and work for children and families, including arts and crafts projects, help with the apple harvest and cider pressing, singing around the bonfire and of course eating lots of fresh food from the farm.

The study portion of the weekend takes the form of short morning and evening sessions. This year, our theme will be about celebrating the abundance and will be presented by Dave Wides. We will explore themes including the “The Morality of Food”, “Greening Sacred Spaces” and “Faith Based Farming”. Dave will share inspiring stories, perspectives and examples from across North America of how faith based communities are preserving our environment for future generations. Our learning process will be grounded in the shared sacred space of Sorrento Centre. Our presentations are designed to inspire each of us to go home and “green” the sacred spaces of our homes, parishes and wider communities.

We will explore morality by learning about creative and hopeful ways of fulfilling our responsibilities to our earth community. This Thanksgiving will offer an opportunity to take part in both the ideas and the practice of sharing the abundance. This weekend experience is destined to be a fulfilling celebration of our traditional Thanksgiving.

DAVE WIDES is the Sorrento Centre Farm Manager and Grounds Supervisor. Dave holds a Degree in Sustainable Agriculture Systems from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has more than 10 years of experience in the field of farming and community gardening. Dave held the position of Farm Manager for the Daughters of Charity Seton Harvest Community Supported Agriculture Project in Evansville Indiana before he accepted the position of Farm Manager at the Sorrento Centre Farm.
