Gladstone’s Library has an extensive collection of rare, unique, and distinctive printed books, including items from the birth of printing in the 15th Century, to beautiful examples of small-press printing from the 20th Century to the present. Plus, of course, the 32,000-volume library of our founder, W.E. Gladstone.

In this hour-long talk, Library Assistant Gary Butler will explore the meaning, value and history of the book through items held in our collections. Books from the collection will also be on show, giving you the opportunity to see some of our rarest items.

Come along and learn more about the beauty, diversity, and resilience of the printed word through some of the treasures right here on our shelves.

Gary Butler was educated at Hull and Manchester University and has almost finished his training in librarianship at Aberystwyth University. He has worked at Gladstone’s Library as Library Assistant since 2013. He is currently researching the history of the collections at Gladstone’s Library from 1900 – 1930.
